Backgammon in Sweden: The Williams Cup
Backgammon was thriving in Sweden in 2006, and players visiting the country that autumn had a chance to join the Williams Cup, a one-day tournament held on Sunday 10 September 2006 in Uppsala.
Format
The Williams Cup had a single class open to all players. Swedish participants had to be members of the Swedish Backgammon Federation or of the Uppsala Backgammon Club; membership could be taken out on the spot. Alongside the main event there was a consolation tournament, and the organisers planned to decide on the day whether it would be run as a progressive or a straight consolation.
Both options are common in club events. In a straight consolation, players who lose their first match in the main draw move into a separate knockout of their own. In a progressive consolation, players who lose in the first rounds of the main draw can still enter the consolation, so more of the field keeps playing for longer into the day.
