The Los Angeles Open, June 2006
The 57th Los Angeles Open was scheduled for June 9–11, 2006, at the LAX Sheraton Gateway Hotel. The tournament was part of the American Backgammon Tour and had been organised twice a year since 1981 by L.A. Gammon Associates, a club based in Van Nuys, California. The directors were Patrick and Carla Gibson.
The club behind the event
L.A. Gammon Associates met every week. The weekly tournaments were played as randomly drawn matches of 5 or 7 points under the U.S. Backgammon Tournament Rules, and players collected master points throughout the year. The 16 players with the most points at the end of the year qualified for the "Tournament of Champions".
Divisions
Final registration closed on Friday evening at 17:45, and the updated 2005 U.S. Backgammon Tournament Rules and Procedures were used. The programme was split into several categories:
- Super 32: open to all players, single elimination, with matches of up to 15 points.
- Open: also open to everyone, played as double elimination with progressive consolation, which gave each player more than one route to the later rounds.
- Advanced and Limited: restricted to players with an online rating below 1700 and approval from the eligibility committee.
Side events included doubles and 2-point quickies.
Previous champions
In 2005, Jason Lee won the 55th Los Angeles Open, and Stepan Nuniyants won the California State Championship.
