Scottish Open 2007
The 2007 Slattery Scottish Open, run by the British Isles Backgammon Association (BIBA), was held on 10 and 11 March 2007. The organisers reported a good turnout, and the field included the reigning world champion, Philip Vischjager, who played the 11-point matches of the Main.
Main (48)
Play began on Saturday afternoon, and by the evening eight players remained. In the quarter-finals Chris Gibbins beat Simonetta Herrera, Adrian Jones beat Jon Samuel, Gerry Enslin beat Paul Gilbertson and Uldis Lapikens beat Jerry Limb. Gerry then beat Uldis and Adrian beat Chris, setting up an Adrian Jones v Gerry Enslin final.
The 11-point final was a lively one. After six games Gerry was 9-1 down. He fought back, but Adrian reached 10-5 at the Crawford game, which Gerry won, and the match eventually went to double match point. There Gerry missed the key idea of the position: with 2-2 he hit and made points with 20/18* 8/6 6/4(2), whereas the priority was to stop his opponent from anchoring, for example with 20/18* 18/16 3/1*(2). Adrian rolled 6-1, anchored, later hit a shot during the bear-off and built a six-prime. Gerry conceded when his chances had dropped to almost nothing.
Other events
The Consolation (44) final was a rematch of the Jarvis Trophy final played a month earlier, and once again Giorgio Castellano beat Peter Chan. The Last Chance was run as an open draw of 64 and was won by Jeff Barber over Tom Duggan, who was making a welcome return to BIBA events. The Haggis (16), played as 3-point matches, went to Paul Barwick ahead of Myke Wignall. On Friday evening the Friday 500 (16) had a strong field and was won by Giorgio Castellano, with Jerry Limb second. In the Doubles (4), 'No Name Men' narrowly beat 'A Cake of Cheese' in the final. On Saturday evening the players enjoyed a cabaret of music and limericks.
